Significant investments have been made in the infrastructure, capacity, fan experience, and corporate partnership opportunities across the 46-acre National Tennis Center campus. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Capital Projects and Facilities Management team manages this amazing complex which hosts the annual US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. This is the largest outdoor tennis-only venue in the world by capacity.

For the last fifteen years, Adco has had the privilege of working on many capital projects within the USTA campus including the 8,000-seat GrandStand, which hosts multiple food courts and concession stands, the South Campus Tennis Court, a multi-court tennis facility that hosts qualifying matches, and The Broadcast Center.

Most notable was the Arthur Ashe Stadium Retractable Roof Project. The team included AECOM, WSP, and Hardesty & Hanover (H&H) who collaborated and designed the kinetics and mechanization for the retractable roof. The new roof was built over the existing 23,000-seat tennis stadium. Each panel is driven by ten electro-mechanically powered and synchronized planetary-gear-driven, 125-horsepower, winches. As the roof opens, regenerative drives capture the kinetic energy from that motion and convert it into electrical energy, which is fed back into the local power grid. 1 This was a fascinating and transformative project. Adco’s installation services on these projects included new electrical infrastructure, substations with emergency generator backup, hi-powered LED tower lighting with process aiming, data and low voltage systems, services to all areas across the complex as well as continual maintenance and support during the US Open.
